TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Committee (KPU) officially announced that up to April 21, 2019, there were 54 members of polling station working committees (KPPS) who died during and after the 2019 General Elections’ voting day.
“54 people passed away and another 32 have fallen ill,” said KPU commissioner Viryan Aziz at his office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday.
According to Viryan, the main cause of the deaths and illnesses are fatigue and other factors, such as accidents.
In light of the incidents, he called on other KPPS members to maintain their stamina as the national vote tally was still afoot. “It’s sad to see our friends passed away. They were the true heroes of the 2019 Indonesia Election.“

He also hoped that the Helath Ministry and regional governments could render free health services to KPPS members who were still counting the votes to avert more deaths.
The KPU, in coordination with the Finance Ministry, confirmed that the institution would compensate the families of KPPS members who died and those who were presently hospitalized.
